We tour Brasov, a great cultural and trading center, and then visit the medieval fortified church of Harman. Next is a bike ride deep into the countryside to rural villages where we experience the traditional hospitality of the Romanian people.
Days 4-7 Sighisoara-Sibiu-Fagaras Mountains. We continue across Transylvania on our bikes past timeless villages and fortified churches to the town of Sighisoara, considered by many the most beautiful and well preserved medieval citadel in Europe still inhabited today. Next stop is colorful Sibiu, the largest medieval city in Transylvania and designated the European Capital of Culture in 2007. A drive into the heart of the Carpathians and the rugged Fagaras Mountains leads to Balea Lake, where we hike through stunning alpine country, ever alert for chamois, the wild goat of the Carpathians. The next day we bike down from the mountains and ride on through picturesque villages to the town of Zarnesti and Piatra Craiului (King's Rock) National Park.
Days 8-9 Piatra Craiului National Park-Dracula's Castle. Today is full of options! Hike through a gorge where part of the movie Cold Mountain was filmed. Or kayak a scenic river, try the new adventure sport of canyoning, mountain bike, rock climb or watch European brown bears from a blind. We visit Bran Castle, famous as Dracula's Castle and explore the picturesque villages in the area by foot, talking with locals and sampling the local cuisine.
