Kick It Up a Notch on the Kokopelli Trail

By the end of the summer, even a moderate mountain biker will have worked out the kinks, limbered up the limbs, and primed the muscles for those steady rises. It'll be time to kick it up a notch on the classic Kokopelli Trail.

Guided mountain biking around Moab is packaged with whitewater rafting on the Colorado River, hiking into Arches National Park, and introductory rock climbing in the Moab Valley as part of the Kokopelli Multi-Sport offered this fall by The World Outdoors.

Following rigorous daytime excursions, guests will bed down in backcountry camps set in stunning red rock locations on the banks of the Colorado to savor the desert silence, the blaze of the campfire, and the glow of sunrise on canyon walls.

The tour launches with two days of mountain biking along 45 miles of the renowned Kokopelli Trail, featuring panoramas of the river and ventures into side canyons. On the third day, guests will experience whitewater rafting through the black schist of Westwater Canyon with its Funnel Falls and other thrilling rapids.

Adventurers will travel mostly by foot for the next two days, with a little more biking on some fun slickrock sections, as they explore Arches National Park and its fantastic environment. Highlights include vistas and close-up views of the labyrinth of sandstone fins of the Fiery Furnace, picturesque Delicate Arch, massive Tower Arch, and Fisher Towers—the setting for several Western movies.

The destination for the final day is Moab Valley, where guests will strap on climbing harnesses for an introduction to the sport of rock climbing. They'll learn the fundamentals and progress to some basic climbs before and after lunch.

Trip dates are Sept. 11-16 (tailored to singles); and Oct. 2-7. The trip is rated moderate to challenging. Cost starts at $1,295.
